Bravo to “Field of Dreams” actor Kevin Costner with coming up with what looks like a viable system to clean up the spilled oil in the Gulf. Also, 18 year old PhD College Professor Alia Sabur came up with a method to cap the oil leak. Another American came up with a way to sop up oil with hay. The Gulf oil spill is a terrible tragedy, but Americans always ”step up to the plate” to solve any and all problems. That is the American way and it makes my chest burst with pride. Americans do not sit on their collective rear-ends like they do in Europe and wait for the government to fix all problems which never seems to happen. America rose to greatness by the energy, hard work and innovation of people like Kevin Costner who enjoy America’s unique free enterprise system which has made us the greatest and richest Country on earth.

On the other hand I am extremely ashamed of President Obama. All he has done so far is say that he is going to “kick some a _ _” to get the oil spill fixed. This is the type of remark one would expect from some type of gutter-snipe, not the President of the United States. Obama made this remark while hosting a lavish, taxpayer-funded party at the White House featuring entertainers like Paul McCartney. While being given an award by President Obama, McCartney made a very disparaging remark about President Bush and Obama did not rebuke McCartney in any way. If I had been President I would have invited Mr. McCartney out to the South Lawn for a serious “Attitude Adjustment.”

Again, we have the greatest Country on earth and everyone needs to appreciate this undeniable fact.

The above phrase is found in Matthew 12:25 and President Lincoln used the phrase in a speech on June 16, 1858. I thought of this phrase in light of the incredible political developments over this last year. In my lifetime, I have never witnessed our Nation more divided than it is now. Many States are standing up and filing lawsuits against the federal government over the Healthcare Bill. The House and the Senate are totally polarized to the point that legislation is being passed without a single Republican signatory and against the wishes of the American people. This is going to bring about a very dire situation unless something changes and I am not talking about “Change We Can Believe In.” The problem is that the majority of Americans have rejected the “Change” that Obama has brought to America. Let’s stop marching down this road as I fear the destination will be something none of us want. That is why I believe it is absolutely crucial that Conservative Republicans take over the House and Senate in November. As Thomas Jefferson famously stated, “Democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.” Jefferson also stated, “It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.” Let us all pray and work together to encourage our elected Representatives to work together and not destroy the greatest Country in history!

Susan and I rode in the “Stand Up for America” parade in Port Wentworth, GA on April 24th and it was extremely uplifting to see and feel the tremendous pride and patriotism of Americans. Thousands of parade watchers were waving American flags and shouting their support for America. Many military veterans participated in the parade and I was honored to meet a veteran who was rendered totally blind by a grenade during the Korean War, yet managed to kill eleven of the enemy before his eyesight left him forever. This brave patriot and millions of others realize that the freedoms that we fought for in Valley Forge, the Sand of Iwo Jima and many other battlefields are under a tremendous assault by the current Administration in Washington.

As the famous song by Lee Greenwood states, “I’m proud to be an American cause at least I know I’m free and I won’t forget the men who died who gave that right to me.” Well, our individual freedoms are under tremendous attack by our own government. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann recently stated that our government now either owns or controls over 51% of our private economy. The really scary part is that our own government is demonizing the very Americans who do stand up for America, calling us “teabaggers”, racists, etc.

Let us not be deterred. I challenge all of you to Stand Up for America!

I just learned today that Attorney General Eric Holder omitted, from his Senate Confirmation hearings, that he had submitted Amicus (Friend of the Court) briefs in support of convicted terrorist Jose Padilla, who had planned to explode a “Dirty” bomb in the United States. This revelation by Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama is especially troubling in that Holder is now the United States Attorney General and has pushed to give full American citizen legal rights to the 9/11 terrorists and to the Christmas “Underwear Bomber.” Holder has also advocated closing Guantanamo Bay in spite of the fact that this is a “State of the Art” facility that cost taxpayers 200 million dollars to build. In addition, a new courthouse was recently constructed in Guantanamo at a cost of 75 million dollars. Why would any American in their right mind want to close this perfect facility, which is not on American soil, and transfer its terrorist inmates to a facility in the United States, which would again cost hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. Do Obama and Holder really think that this action will make the terrorists around the world like us better? All of this literally makes blood spurt out of my eyes. The November elections will be the most consequential of our lifetimes. The craziness in Washington needs to be halted and I hope I am elected as a Congressman for the 12th District of Georgia to help take back America and restore some sense of sanity in our Government.

It is amazing to me how analogous our current political situation is to that December day in 1773 when a group of protestors, disguised as Indians, threw bales of tea into Boston Harbor to protest not having a say in the decisions being made by Britain, despite being forced to pay heavy taxes.

In 1773 we had a total of 13 Colonies. In 2010 it is ironic that almost that same number of States have filed lawsuits against our federal government for ramming a healthcare bill down the throats of the American people when the overwhelming majority of the people did not want this legislation. Our current administration in Washington is not listening to the American people, making our government structure into something other than a Representative Republic.

When my wife and I marched in the 9/12 March on Washington last year one of the primary chants voiced by the 1.7 million marchers was, “Can You Hear Me Now?” Obviously, our government is not listening to the people and this has the potential of erupting into a serious conflict between the people and the government.

When I travel around the 12th District of Georgia and attend functions such as the “Bloomin’ Festival” last weekend in Metter, I am constantly approached by citizens lamenting the fact that their elected Representatives are no longer representing them. The overwhelming majority of people I have spoken with no longer trust their elected Representatives and many voiced the opinion that we should throw all incumbents out of office. We definitely need to bring America’s founding principles and prosperity back and halt our rapid descent into a Socialist type of governance. The incredible levels of debt that America currently has is totally unsustainable and we must change course as quickly as possible to save our beloved Country.

All we hear from our current Administration is how undeserving the wealthy are and how we need to “redistribute” their wealth. The President himself has talked about the Wall Street “fat cats” and how the government should limit the amount of pay that executives earn. The President has also made statements that doctors unnecessarily remove tonsils and charge $30,000 to amputate legs. All of this talk from the highest levels of government has turned millions of people against the greatest free enterprise system in history. Our free enterprise system has enabled America to become the greatest economic powerhouse in history and has raised the lifestyles of the poor more than any country on earth. Only in America do the poor have a problem with obesity.

Let’s set the record straight for a change. Almost every wealthy person I have known got that way by incredible amounts of hard work. One friend of mine worked seven days a week and did not take a vacation for twenty years. He is now wealthy and well able to take expensive vacations. A friend of mine with whom I worked in Washington became a General in the Air Force. He lived in Bowie, Maryland and was always in his office in downtown DC by 5:30 am and usually did not leave until at least 8:00 pm. Does anyone happen to know a wealthy farmer who punches a time clock? How about the doctors who are under severe attack by this administration? I lived next to an ObGyn doctor in the Air Force and I don’t think the poor guy ever got a full night’s sleep or was able to take a vacation.

Should we demonize Bill Gates? How about Thomas Edison? How about Dr. Jonas Salk?

People should realize that the Government has no money and earns no money. Let’s encourage the government to ease up on the demonizing of the very people who provide the government with the money on which it operates.

It is now very obvious that American business, especially small business,is foundering along with the entire American economy. The huge boat anchor around the neck of business is our onerous tax system which imposes the highest taxes in the world with rates between 35% to 41.6%. Compare this rate to countries such as China, 25%, and Ireland at 12.5%. Ireland is now a booming economy because of this favorable business tax rate.

Our incredibly confusing and tax system, conversely, punishes business and drives it overseas. American businesses also have to spend billions of dollars collecting and cataloguing thousands of receipts and other paperwork and then pay an accountant to sort this confusing mess out. Further, get it wrong and you are put in jail.

American business does not need tax credits which are totally useless unless they are making money, American business needs the elimination of all federal taxes.

The Fairtax would eliminate federal income taxes, social security taxes and Medicare taxes and would eliminate having to spend badly needed time and money to comply with the 66,000 page income tax code. The Fairtax would cause an immediate economic boom by bringing back an estimated 13 trillion dollars which are currently invested offshore, would create millions of new jobs and would increase the average take home pay of the American worker by 56%.

The time for a new tax system is now!

Larry wrote an excellent piece on the Forum last night, but stated that I said that one way to fix Social Security was that older people “should be willing to make sacrifices like the rest of us.”

In fact,George Grady made this statement, not I. I would never make such a statement. Social Security can be fixed, but not on the backs of older people. My position on Social Security is that we can take positive steps right now to fix Social Security and insure that the necessary funds for Social Security will be there when people reach retirement age. I even mentioned the example of the “zero bond” technique I used as a banker to guarantee funds would be available far into the future. If you recall, I also mentioned this technique when I spoke to you on the phone several weeks ago.

I would appreciate it if you could somehow correct the record as I would not want to lose the support of all senior citizens especially since I “are” one.

Three Republicans who want to replace Democrat John Barrow try out talking points

Posted: March 10, 2010 – 1:17am

By Larry Peterson

Carl Smith repeatedly blamed Democratic U.S. Rep. John Barrow for what he called “lack of leadership.”

Mike Horner called for solutions to a runaway national problem he said menaces America’s future.

George Grady said illegal immigration is behind many major national woes.

And Jeanne Seaver didn’t show up, saying candidates shouldn’t debate before qualifying, which starts April 26.

So it went Tuesday at the first forum for Republican candidates in Barrow’s 12th Congressional District.

Each participating candidate raised other issues but laid out a theme he’ll likely repeat as the campaign unfolds.

The winner of the July 20 GOP primary election – or a runoff, if needed – will face the Democratic nominee in the Nov. 9 general election. So far, Barrow has one Democratic foe – former state Sen. Regina Thomas.

Smith, the fire chief and a former town council member in Thunderbolt, zeroed in on Barrow at almost every turn.

He said the incumbent has done little to help win funds for the Port of Savannah or to create jobs.

“Our congressman goes out having meetings on the corner and talking about jobs,” Smith said. “I’m tired of talking about jobs.”

He also said Barrow’s taken campaign money from both sides on a controversial health care reform bill and waited “until the last minute” to say how he’ll vote.

He urged people to “flood his office with phone calls” to urge him to vote against it if – as is expected – it comes up for another vote.

A spokeswoman for Barrow, who already has repeatedly voted against the measure, could not be reached for comment late Tuesday.

Horner, a retired Air Force officer and banker, said he knows how to reduce the national debt.

One way, he said, is revamping Social Security.

“If older Americans want their funds to be there,” he said, “they have to be willing to make sacrifices like the rest of us.”

Horner said another solution is to avoid duplication in the federal bureaucracy.

He said 352 agencies promote economic development, while 52 deal with fishing.

“Why not one?” he said.

He also said the “FairTax,” a plan to scrap most federal taxes in favor of a national sales tax, would increase revenue and help the economy.

When asked what the top issue is, Savannah restaurant owner Grady cited the economy, but said that’s linked to illegal immigrants.

He said unfair competition from them is a major source of unemployment.

Grady also said they are a major strain on government services, especially in California. That state, he said, should get no more federal transportation money until it does a better job of curbing illegal immigration.

And in Georgia, he said, the federal government should encourage cities to make it a misdemeanor to rent housing to illegal immigrants.

That, Grady said, “would deter …. (illegal immigrants) from coming to this town for work.”

Seaver announced her decision not to participate two and a half hours before the event.

She said she is “excited and anxious” to debate after candidates qualify “and we know who they are going to be.”

“We feel that it is premature to debate prior to qualification and not giving potential future candidates the opportunity to participate,” she said.

Seaver said she wasn’t aware it is common for debates to be held prior to qualification.

But Martin Sullivan, chairman of Savannah Area Young Republicans, which sponsored the event, disagreed.

Sullivan noted there have been several forums for Republican and Democratic candidates for governor.

Former Air Force officer wants to be the GOP chanllenger to U.S. Rep. John Barrow

A retired Air Force officer, investment adviser and banker from Savannah is seeking the 12th Congressional District seat.

Mike Horner has become the third Republican to announce a bid to replace Democratic incumbent John Barrow of Savannah.

It will be the first time the former special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations has sought public office.

A self-described “super patriot,” Horner said he is running because “the principles on which our country was founded are under attack, and we have to fight to get them back.”

Horner’s main criticism of Barrow is that he voted for President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus bill and for raising the national debt limit to $1.9 trillion.

“The nation is on a razor,” said Horner, who moved to Savannah in 2001. “We’re headed in the wrong direction. …The Social Security System is paying out more than it’s taking in.

“Politicians keep kicking the can down the road, and no one will step in with a solution. … We need to do that now, even if it’s painful.”

Horner said his top priority would be finding ways to shore up Social Security and Medicare.

Problems with the way those programs’ money is handled are the main reason for the country’s debt crisis, he said.

One step, he said, might be to try former President George W. Bush’s idea. Bush proposed to let younger workers use part of their Social Security accounts for private investments.

The controversial proposal was a non-starter, Horner said, mostly because it was “demagogued” by Democrats.

Horner acknowledged it will be big job to reach voters in the 12th, which sprawls over all or parts of more than 20 counties.

“You’ve got to get in your car,” he said. “And, to be cost- effective, you have to be on TV, but it’s expensive, so I have to raise some money. But I have a lot of friends who urged me to do this.”

Horner conceded his lack of political experience. But he said that may be an asset because of the low regard polls have shown most people have for Congress.

“I do bring some things to the table,” he said. “I’ve commanded over 200 people in the Air Force, and I have a great deal of financial experience.”

Others running in the July 20 GOP primary are Thunderbolt Fire Chief Carl Smith and Savannah party activist Jeanne Seaver.

Local businessman George Brady has said he may run as a Republican or an independent.

Barrow was elected in 2004 and was re-elected in 2006 and 2008.

So far, his only primary opponent is former state Sen. Regina Thomas, who unsuccessfully opposed him for renomination in 2008.

I got to meet and shake hands with many interesting people such as former Speaker of the House Dick Armey, former Governor Jim Gilmore of Virginia, Congressman Tom Price of Georgia, etc. One of the photos is of Andrew Breitbart who was behind the undercover duo who posed as a pimp and a prostitute which exposed the corruption in Acorn.

We also attended a Tea Party reception right in the Hotel complete with a live band and lots of energy and enthusiasm. Met with lots of fellow Congressional candidates and Political Action Committees who shared information and tips on how to run a successful campaign. Left the Conference with renewed vigor and a commitment to return America to its Conservative roots and to the American dream of freedom, free enterprise and a love of God. Almost every speaker, much more than last year, spoke of America’s strong belief in God and that this belief is the foundation of all of America’s original documents and is carved in marble and granite in the buildings, structures and statuary of our Nation’s capitol.
